Art by David S Goodsell
This work was created as a commissioned project for Biosite. This view shows DNA being replicated in the nucleus. DNA polymerase is shown at the center in purple, with a DNA strand entering from the bottom and exiting as two strands towards the top. The new strands are shown in white. Chromatin fibers are shown at either site of the replication fork.

So our assignment for Advanced Character Design was to choose one of four movies: Harry Potter, Star Wars, The Matrix, or Lord of the Rings, and redesign it for a hypothetical remake. Obviously this is really hard, since all these movies are so iconic and I’d super hate to get the job of remaking it for real, because everyone would hate me. Anyway, I chose Lord of the Rings, because of course I did.
From top to bottom we have: Aragorn, Gimli (as a lady-dwarf because I do what I want), Legolas, and Eowyn. I knew I wanted to pull in some nonwestern influences and include more non-white characters in lead roles, but it was still really hard to shake the imagery from the movies, which have a really strong aesthetic and which I’ve seen about a million times. I also wanted Eowyn to contrast more strongly with Arwen (who didn’t actually get drawn), and so I made her a bit stocky with a kind of Brienne-of-Tarth thing in mind.

Mesolithic female shaman of Bad Dürrenberg, 7000-6500 bce, with reconstructed regalia from animal bones, horns, teeth, and shells. From a wonderful color-illustrated pdf of “Archaeological Finds from Germany” from the paleolithic to the christian era. Other interesting finds too.
